As usual, I can't vote because it is not that simple. The writing.  The process is much in my head over a week or so, phrases, links, editing, being moved this way and that. The actual writing  down (not what I'd actually call writing) is done when it gels to a point where it is time. This could be in a journal or at the computer, on a walk, or sitting in place. But the real "writing process" happens usually "on the move" in one way or another and also while waking or sleeping, and in between...

Of course this was the point of my asking the question I too would love to be able to say that if I sit in a particular place at a particular time of day then my writing will be good. The truth is very different. Left to my own devices inspiration is a fickle thing and I can churn out drivel ad nausium at some points, and the write something quite inspired in the middle of the most dry periods.

But for me there is something about the discipline of sitting down to write every day which keeps me writing and hopefully keeps me growing as a writer.  I find that when I am able to make myself do that it provokes inspiration at other times. The best way I can describe the process is that its a bit like practicing an instrument every day. Scales and exercises are not very exciting (particularly for the neighbours!) but having worked at my art in that way consistantly my other playing improves. And I catch myself humming tunes on the bus on the way to work, or wake in thenight with ideas. As with music, so with writing.

I agree it's not that simple, however, most people have general tendencies.

For example, I tend to write in front of computer. It's not a die-hard thing, but it's the best answer.

I also write on the train from time to time, and i can't write where there's any music playing, that messes me up something awful.

I suspect that most pepole on this site would say the same thing. Those tending to write in other ways might be less likely to subscribe to a writing website at all.

Yes. I have to agree with you there. I simply cannot write or indeed do any work that requires concentration with music in the background. Particularly other people's choices of music, coming through the back of their headphones. Incredibly distracting. My answer such as it is is to play a natural sounds CD. Happily I recently discivered that it is possible to buy ones without a music track. My current favourite is "Woodland Bridleway"

I always in the end type the poem into the computer. And sometimes I write the first draft there using fragments in my head already for a while, plus scribbled phrases in my notebooks.  I can't type in my laptop in the pool or while I walk, and a lot of my poetry "happens" then.  So I carry a small handmade journal...why do I say "handmade"?  I've found that the more "beautiful" the paper and format... blank pages literallythe more the poem is entranced into and out of it... it's a personal thing.  Then at home when the mind-space opens, a very delicate choice, I find, the right moment, I put it on the computer-page.  I love that too....So really, almost every poem has elements of all of that... I can write with any music or noise... maybe because I have always been surrounded by it children, musician friends and husband, etc... it's like the ocean to me, and usually my world opens and closes like a book within it... though it may be all wet.

Sorry.  I'm playing with the fonts.  I'm child like.  like child.  Hmmmm, this week I do not like children.  , they can test you.

I digress.  There needed to be a "When the mood strikes and there is a napkin, old envelope,  to scribble on" answer.

Lately, I actually write in complete silence at my computer. Sound messes me up in a big way. Not that that's a huge change, but I haven't been writing on the train, and i can't write in the room with the TV. I used to be slightly more able to cope with distractions. I'm not so much lately. I blame society.

Well I usually write in a very quiet space in front of the computer.. or while hiking or walking the beach.. I'll just sit down and type it out on my phone and then email it to my computer... although..  I'm hoping that this isn't my best writing!!  ha ha..I'm  hoping I'll learn a thing or two or a hundred from you all!!!  ha ha..

For me, it strikes at the most odd of times. Usually while I am driving down the road on the way to school. I have to pull over and whip out my tablet to write it down before I forget it! Sometimes, the best feeling is early in the morning while everyone else is asleep and it is only me, a cup of coffee, and my computer...those are the best of times! Sometimes, I will be sitting in class and whatever we are discussing will trigger something in my mind and I write it in the back of the notebook of whatever class I happen to be in, then I have to go on a search and find mission to see where I was when I wrote it!

The where is negotiable... it's the when that bothers me.  It seems it's either ten years ago or some time in the nebulous future.
