Split coconut.
These quotes were part of the Sunday NY Times magazine crossword puzzle on April 22, 2007. It was a tough one, one of the few my husband and I didn't finish.
Poetry is...

"...like fish. If its fresh it's good."
~Osbert Sitwell

"...truth in its Sunday clothes."
~Joseph Roux

"...an echo asking a shadow to dance."
~Carl Sandburg

"...the deification of reality."
~Edith Sitwell

"...an act of peace."
~Pablo Neruda

"...being, not doing."
~e.e. cummings

My very favourite is from Soren Kierkegaard (no surprise I guess):

A poet is an unhappy being whose heart is torn by secret sufferings, but whose lips are so strangely
formed that when the sighs and the cries escape them, they sound like beautiful music...
and then people crowd about the poet and say to him: "Sing for us soon again;"
that is as much as to say, "May new sufferings torment your soul"

All those quotes are wonderful, especially Sitwell and cummings, but I think Kierkegaard takes the cake.

Kierkegaard's quote might be a wee bit long for a crossword puzzle, but it's definitely a keeper.

Depends on the crossword i guess. I mean sure, if you get to 23 across and it's 300 letters, that's the one i'd guess.
