Prompt Exercise - Painting or Picture prompt

avatarJoe R -- on Oct. 25 2008
From a workshop at the MA Poetry Festival

Ok first select a picture or painting. It can be one you know and like, or completely random. I think random is the way to go. We used random photos of paintings in the workshop. Then write based on the following ideas using a time constraint, say 5 minutes for each idea below.

1) Write your own and impressions and thoughts about the painting/picture.

2) Select an object or subject in the painting/picture and write from the point of view of that object or subject.

3) Write from the painter or photographer's point of view regarding the painting/picture.

I find the time limit help to keep you from overthinking.

The workshop was given by Rebecca Givens from the Grub Street writers center in Boston, MA. Hopefully I represented the exercise properly. Rebecca, if you are reading, thanks again!  (www.grubstreet.org)
