far from bulletproof

05:24 am

i remember my dreams
like someone crashing
in an airplane
sees the sky

the night is limit
-less, boundless, a burden
which never fulfills its promise
of peace

i soothe to the smooth
roll of the fan
am present in the room
am present in another

and another, flashes
of place and time
i roll to the rhythmic
sensuality of the fans
as the air from one

caresses the other
as the deep blue bed sheets
unbind at the corners
bunch in the center
call to my legs

to stop
which they refuse
as though were they not
treading i'd drown

Rhode Island fall

12:24 am

you admire the hills
and blanketed leaves, multi
-colored flags which wave
frantically from the trees.

you don't know she died
in this state. you don't know
or understand my anger
which makes me unable
to even look at it. but none

of that is this. i am
another person in those
memories, sharper.

no ifs or ands

07:21 pm

crabby old helene yanks
my shirt to cover
the exposed bra strap and begins
an in my day soliloquy

but stops when she meets
my smile and says: pretty
bra, though. sea-foam
green?          later

behind a closed office door
she offers:   we'll make a jew
out of you yet.

turn around, serenade

07:18 pm

looking at photos of you from that night
it's hard to imagine
that you'd later press
against me, hip
to hip, tongue

to tongue
in the back alley.

your wedding band
on the hand that gripped
my waist as if, once you let

up, i'd run inside
to laugh at how i'd conquered
the married man, not

understanding it was he
who'd conquered me. the guitar
strings have made your fingers

adept at strumming. even
from just seeing you
in pictures, i
sing.

old city

04:04 pm

in this draw-string pouch
of tooth-ache and heart-sting, men

jumbled around each other, limbs
loose and shiny as wax paper

holler out their claims
on my body: quiet alaskan expanse

more comfortable abandoned
than dug or plowed, planted, reaped

and sowed. in summer
the heat swells them. they bubble

and burst, lithe and heady, press
me against walls outside after midnight

moan when i moan, promise
what is never meant to be trusted.

disastrous dinosaurus
row row row
row row row row row row
row row row

one two three four
one two three four
one two three four

on the count of one
two
three
four:
do you have a ham
for easter dinner ?
do you eat it with
mustard, your wife
by your side? your
babies at the kid t
able?

am i on your mind?

am i am i am i on your mind
am i peanut butter,
am i ?

delinquent thoughts roam
like garden gnomes
in red bonnets.
we've been meeting
in this fantasy
for a month now,
nearly two.
